“Isn’t it lovely? Wonderful, lovely stuff.” – Lauren Laverne (BBC 6Music)
“Puts together all that’s best about current electronic music. Intricate but punchy, weird but very wonderful… this is really lush stuff.” – Mixmag
“…it is rare for a band to make tracks with swing and groove with enough canvas to let rappers glide. It reminds me if Thievery Corporation came out fresh today, fusing several genres in fresh ways, without the baggage that trip-hop comes with.” Jeff Weiss, Passion of the Weiss
Dark Edges Of The Cosmos
Having previously collaborated with the likes of Shafiq Husayn, Chester Watson and Foreign Beggars, electronic space funk outfit Paper Tiger return from an explorative journey to the dark edges of the cosmos with their long-awaited third album ‘Rogue Planet’.
‘The Cycle’ (the first single to be lifted from this new offering) features the unmistakeable vocal stylings of the legendary Steve Spacek. His delicate tones fall weightlessly in slow motion, gracefully lacing the track with a wide-eyed childlike atmosphere. Underneath, an effervescent current of textured samples ebbs and weaves – propelled by a downtempo Bruk-esque rhythm section, occasionally accented by emotive key flourishes, jazzy chords and laid-back horns.
Self Sampling and Beat Making
B-side ‘[Quick Wash]’ is made to run straight on from the lead track in a kind of “extended” version. A taste of the fluidity and fluency of Paper Tiger’s album making. And don’t miss that super-bumpy Shy One remix.
Just like the journey from debut long-player ‘Laptop Suntan’ to sophomore album ‘Blast Off’, and in- keeping with the band’s space travel fascination, ‘Rogue Planet’ is a cosmic leap from its predecessor. As a first small step into the feel of the album, ‘The Cycle’ is the perfect choice. Despite being a typical mix of live recording, self-sampling and beat making, it has something of a different tone. Their emphasis on blending organic sounds with electronic production techniques results in a unique proposition, music which is interesting and technically proficient, but remains vibrant, colourful and funky… captivating both in headphones and on the dancefloor.

“The buzz has started about Paper Tiger’s upcoming album release and this ‘tease’ single with guest vocals from Steve Spacek has upped the ante. ‘The Cylce’ is trademark Paper Tiger and there’s even a dub snippet to add to an edit [love it]. For the more jazz-funk house orientated, there’s a remix by Shy One but there’s not much known about him/her/them/it. Don’t rush to send in your ‘Best of 2018′ lists ’til you dig this.” Gerry Hectic, 60 Million Postcards / Bournemouth / Futuristica Music / Jazz Chronicles
